This is the heart of our fragrance world. I have loved perfume my whole life, its history, its language and the places a single bottle can carry you to, so I brought fragrance here as an experience rather than a shelf of bottles. Every house is hand-picked for craft, chosen the way Polperro treats wine, with restraint and respect for the land and a story of site and season held inside.

Why these houses and not the ones everyone knows

I choose independent houses and master perfumers, deliberately not the scents made under the big marketing-led groups. What earns a place here is the work in the bottle, the quality of the materials and a point of view that feels genuinely its own. If a fragrance is only famous, that is not a reason to stock it.

It is the same discipline we bring to everything, fewer things chosen well. I would rather go deep on a handful of houses I trust than line the wall with names. That is how you come to understand a perfumer over time, how a composition opens on the skin and how it settles into an afternoon, which is the part most retailers never let you reach.

The edit runs from Santa Maria Novella, distilling in Florence since 1221, to Matière Première and the naturals-led work of ORMAIE Paris, alongside Nasomatto, Eight & Bob, P Frapin & Cie, Lubin and Trudon. Different worlds, one standard. We pour these at masterclasses and fragrance evenings with Polperro cuvées, because scent is best understood in good company.

Questions, answered

What is an independent perfume house?

A house that exists to make perfume and nothing else, answering to the perfumer and the materials. None of the eight we carry is a fashion label lending its name to a licence.

How do I find a fragrance across so many houses?

Start with a discovery set. The Matière Première and Santa Maria Novella kits let you live with several compositions at home for a few days, which tells you far more than a spray at a counter. A scent opens, breathes and settles over an afternoon.

What is the difference between eau de parfum and eau de cologne?

Concentration. Eau de parfum carries more perfume oil, so it sits closer to the skin and lasts longer. Cologne is lighter and brighter and asks to be reapplied.

Can I try before I buy a full bottle?

Yes. Travel sizes and discovery sets are the way in, and we run fragrance evenings and masterclasses at Red Hill with Polperro cuvées alongside.
