Magali arrived in Bali in 2002, trained at ENSAD in Paris and stayed. For years there was one atelier and one boutique on the island. We went every year on our surfing trip and I went straight there, before anything else, before I had a shop of my own to put anything in.
When I opened Amelie & Frank's I knew Magali Pascal would be the first brand on the rail. That was not a buying decision. It was twenty-three years of already knowing.
The collections are still made on the island through the house's own atelier, alongside local artisans, on a team that is overwhelmingly women and largely Balinese. The signatures have not moved. Cut-out embroidery worked by hand so the pattern reads through the cloth rather than sitting on top of it, sheer silk and lace, a French line loosened.
The house has grown since the one boutique. The cut has not changed much, which is the point.
Live in it the way it was drawn. A Desa dress over bare skin in summer, a lace piece under a coat when the Peninsula turns. Clothes for travel and for long unhurried days, folding down small.
