Vilagallo
The happiest thing on the rail
Vilagallo was founded in Madrid in 1997 and named for two of its founders. Villalón and Gallo, run together. The offices are still on Velazquez Street. It is designed between Madrid and Italy and made entirely in Europe.
The prints are the reason. They are drawn for the house and printed in Spain, so you will not meet them on anything else. Decorative tiles. Leopard crossed with the Retiro Park. Cat silhouettes on a geometric shirt, which sounds ridiculous written down and is not when you see it. Even the linings are printed.
Underneath the colour it is proper tailoring. A jacket that holds its line, a trouser cut straight, stretch where it is needed. Classic shapes with something going on, which is how the house describes itself and is exactly right.
I brought it in because you cannot help feeling happy in it. Bright, bouncy and glamorous, all at once. That is a rare thing to find in a rail of clothes and it is not something you can manufacture.
It is new to Australia and we are one of a very small number of stockists. Finding houses like this and bringing them home to Red Hill is the part of the job I like most.
Vilagallo, in short
Who is Vilagallo?
A Spanish womenswear house founded in Madrid in 1997 and named for two of its founders, Inés Villalón and Beatriz Gallo. It is known for bold original prints, strong colour and proper tailoring. Designed between Madrid and Italy and made entirely in Europe.
What is Vilagallo known for?
Prints drawn for the house and printed in Spain, so they appear on nothing else. Shirts, blazers, dresses and trousers cut classically and then coloured and patterned in a way almost nobody else attempts. Even the linings are printed.
Where can you buy Vilagallo in Australia?
At Amelie & Frank's. The house is new to Australia and we are one of a very small number of stockists. Online with complimentary shipping on orders over $100, and in person at Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula.
Questions, answered
Where is Vilagallo made?
Entirely in Europe. The house designs between Madrid and Italy and the prints are printed in Spain.
Are the prints exclusive to the house?
Yes. They are drawn for Vilagallo and printed for Vilagallo, which is why you will not find them on anything else. It is also why the linings are worth opening a jacket to look at.
Is it loud to wear?
It is not quiet, and that is the point. The cut underneath is classic, so a printed jacket sits over plain trousers and reads as considered rather than costume. If you want to start gently, begin with a striped piece rather than a floral.
How does it fit?
European sizing and a neat, tailored line through the shoulder and waist. If you are between sizes or unsure how a jacket runs, write to us and we will measure the piece and tell you.
Does Amelie & Frank's ship Vilagallo Australia-wide?
Yes, with complimentary shipping on orders over $100, and you are welcome to try it on at Red Hill.
