Made to Measure with Christian Kimber
The Peninsula home of Christian Kimber
Amelie & Frank's is the Peninsula home of Christian Kimber, and Christian comes to Red Hill in person for private made to measure appointments with complimentary styling days by appointment. This is not a service run at arm's length through a form and a set of standard sizes. It is the designer himself in the room, talking through how you want to look and feel and then building a garment to answer that. For men on the Peninsula who care about how their clothes are made, it is a rare thing to have this kind of access close to home.
What made to measure actually means
Made to measure begins with a private consultation covering fit, cloth and styling, and the garment is then cut to your own measurements. It is not a suit off a peg taken in at the seams. The distinction matters. Rather than starting with a finished garment and compromising towards your shape, the process starts with you, your proportions, the way you stand and the life the clothes need to lead. You choose the cloth. You talk through the details. What arrives is made for you and no one else.
Refined scruffiness
Christian Kimber is a Melbourne designer who describes his aesthetic as refined scruffiness, craftsmanship without stiffness. His clothes are designed in Melbourne and made by specialist family run makers in Europe, in Italy and Portugal, where the skill sits in hands that have done this work for generations. The result is tailoring that looks considered without looking severe, clothing you can wear to something that matters and still feel like yourself in. He won Melbourne Fashion Week's National Designer Award in 2019 and counts admirers including Brian Cox of Succession, but the reason we carry him is simpler than any accolade. The clothes are beautifully made and they suit the way people actually want to dress now.
Craftsmanship without stiffness. Clothes made to be lived in, not guarded.
Why we chose him
We do not stock a designer because a name carries weight. We stock Christian Kimber because the clothes hold up when you wear them, season after season, and because the way he thinks about dressing matches the way we think about curation. There is restraint in the work and a lightness that stops it feeling like a uniform. A jacket sits easily over a knit at the weekend and reads just as well with a shirt when the occasion asks for it. That versatility is the point of investing in something made properly. It earns its place in a wardrobe rather than waiting in it. For the man who would rather own a few very good things than a great many ordinary ones, made to measure is the most direct route to exactly that.
