In silver it is a cool, mirror-bright oval with Viktoria & Woods engraved across the face. Against dark hair it is the brightest thing at the back of the head.

The oval is domed and a little uneven, more pebble than geometry. Underneath is a French clasp, a hinged bar that closes against a catch. The body is brass under a sterling silver plate, which carries more weight than resin or thin stamped metal and keeps it lying flat.

Silver plate dulls in open air. A soft cloth brings it back.

Put it on last, after perfume and hairspray. Take it off before water. Wipe with a soft dry cloth and store it out of the light.
