Shorter at the front than at the back, the Alter's hem tucks into a waistband in front while the back still covers.

The sleeves are raglan, set on a diagonal seam from the neck. They finish in a folded cuff. A single button closes the neck at the centre back. The fit is oversized.

The cloth is the same as the Alter Pant: 55% viscose, 31% Tencel and 14% linen, slubbed where the linen runs. The print is in pebble. Worn together the top and pant look like one piece.

POL is an Australian label, founded by Sam Jones in 2008, and cuts in Australian sizes, which are the same as UK sizes. Knits and some tops come in letter sizes instead: an XS is an AU 8, S an AU 10, M an AU 12, L an AU 14 and XL an AU 16. The measurements below are the house's own, in centimetres, taken from the body rather than the garment.

Choosing between two sizes

POL's chart gives the body measurements each size is built on. The house suggests comparing them with your own. Its models generally wear an 8 unless a piece says otherwise. Any style we know to run differently is noted in its Fit line.

How to measure

Bust: around the fullest part.
Waist: around the slimmest part of your natural waist, between the ribcage and the navel.
Hip: around the widest part, at the top of the legs.

Caring for POL knitwear

Check the care label first. If a knit is not dirty, air it between wears instead of washing it.

Hand wash in cool water with a gentle or delicates detergent. The house advises against woolwash, which can make dyes run. A little hair conditioner leaves natural-fibre knits softer.

Roll the knit in a clean towel to lift out the water, reshape it while damp and dry it flat in the shade. Never on the line, which stretches it. Store it folded, not on a hanger.

Some pilling is normal on cotton, merino and cashmere, mostly under the arms and where a bag strap rubs. Hand washing helps, as does keeping knits away from fleece-lined jackets and rough surfaces. A pilling shaver, run lightly over the fabric pulled taut, lifts what appears. Take off jewellery that could snag before you put a knit on.

For everything else, follow the care label sewn into the piece.

Cold gentle machine wash. Line dry in the shade. Warm iron while still slightly damp, or leave the creases, which is rather the point of linen.
