Brushing a knit after it is made lifts the fibre ends into a halo. That is where the softness comes from and why this sweater looks larger than it weighs.

The yarn is alpaca with wool and polyamide, hand knitted and cut oversized, with raglan sleeves and a roll neck generous enough to fall off the shoulder. Alpaca is warmer for its weight than sheep's wool, which is what lets this much volume stay airy instead of turning into bulk.

Every fire pit has one person left at the end, feeding it the last of the kindling long after everyone else has gone in. By then the roll neck is up to the chin and the sleeves are down over the hands.

Mes Demoiselles is a Paris house and labels its pieces in one of two ways: in French sizes, 34 to 44, or in its own sizes 0, 1 and 2, each of which covers two French sizes. Australian sizes are the same as UK sizes, so read across to the UK column of the house chart. A French 36 is an AU 8 and a French 38 an AU 10. A house 0 is an AU 6 to 8, a 1 an AU 10 to 12 and a 2 an AU 14 to 16. The measurements below are the house's own, in centimetres, taken from the body rather than the garment.

Choosing between two sizes

Mes Demoiselles publishes one chart for every style and no separate fit advice, so read your size from your measurements. A French number is two below the Australian one: a French 38 is an AU 10. Where a piece comes in house sizes, each covers two French sizes, so a 1 takes in both an AU 10 and an AU 12. Any style we know to run differently is noted in its Fit line.

How to measure

Chest: around the widest point of the chest and shoulder blades, arms hanging by your sides.
Waist: around the narrowest part of the waist, the tape snug but not tight.
Hip: around the widest point of the hips.

Caring for Mes Demoiselles
