Most rose candles are one rose. Joséphine is a garden with an atlas in it: camellia from China, jasmine from Egypt, rose from Turkey, sandalwood from Indonesia.
That is the point of the scent, because it was the point of the garden. Joséphine Bonaparte was a passionate botanist before she was an empress. In 1799 she bought the château at Rueil Malmaison and planted it with flowers from around the world. Emmanuel Philip, the Grasse-born son of a perfumer, wrote the candle for Trudon. Bergamot, kaffir lime and spice at the top. Chinese camellia, Egyptian jasmine and Turkish rose in the heart. Iris, white musk and Indonesian sandalwood at the base.
Fifty-five to sixty hours on a cotton wick, poured in Normandy into glass from Vinci in Tuscany, finished by hand and shaped after a champagne bucket. Even the label is centred and fixed by hand. Madeleine is the other floral Classic we carry and puts leather under its flowers. Joséphine leaves them alone. The Petit is the same scent at 70g.
When the wax is gone the glass takes a handful of short garden roses.
