Bonaparte understood portraiture as politics before almost anybody else, and commissioned his own image relentlessly.

This is that image in black wax, scaled to a shelf. A candle with a wick, made to be lit, which given the subject's preoccupation with permanence is a decent joke.

Black suits him better than the pale colourways suit the others.
