Filo di Scozia means Scottish thread. It is the Italian name for what the French call fil d'Écosse and the English call lisle.

Two strands of tightly spun cotton are twisted together and mercerised, which makes a yarn that is strong for its weight and takes colour more brightly than a softer one. Christian Kimber has these made in Italy in 100% Filo di Scozia, ribbed and ultra lightweight.

They are meant to sit inside a close-fitting leather shoe and still breathe. Black, brown, burgundy, blue and sand.

Christian Kimber is designed in Melbourne and labelled in Australian men's sizes, so the size on the label is your Australian size and there is nothing to convert. The house publishes one chart, for its shirts. It is measured on the garment rather than the body, in centimetres.

Shirt measurements

Size Length Half chest Sleeve
S 74 51 63.5
M 75 53.5 64.5
L 76 57.5 65.5
XL 77 61.5 66.5

Garment measurements in centimetres. Half chest is measured flat across the shirt, so double it for the full width of the garment. The house chart runs from S to XL. For XX Large and XXX Large, write to us and we will measure the piece.

Trousers and jeans

Trousers and jeans are sized by the waist in inches. The Rose Street jean comes in 28 to 38 with a 32-inch leg. The house describes its cut as a wider seat and thigh for ease of movement, a gentle taper and a mid to high rise.

Choosing between two sizes

Christian Kimber publishes no general fit advice. The cut changes from piece to piece, so each piece we carry has its own Fit line saying how it sits. Start there.

How to measure

The chart measures the shirt, not you, so measure a shirt that already fits you well. Lay it flat on a table, buttoned. Measure straight across the chest just below the arms and compare it with the half chest column, then check the length and sleeve against the chart.

Caring for Christian Kimber

Cotton: machine wash cold or warm and tumble dry on low. Avoid high heat, which shrinks it.

Linen: dry clean if the label says so, otherwise machine wash cool. Air dry or tumble dry on low and iron while it is still slightly damp.

Wool: dry clean if the label says so. Air it between wears, fold it rather than hang it and keep it away from wringing and high heat.

Cashmere: dry clean if the label says so, or hand wash cold with a wool-safe detergent. No bleach and no fabric softener.

Denim: wash inside out in cold water and less often, which keeps the colour. Air dry where you can.

Leather: professional leather cleaning only. Suede: professional cleaning only, brushed with a suede brush and kept away from water.

The care label sewn into each piece is the authority.

Still not sure

We have handled these pieces and can tell you how a particular style sits against the chart. Write to us before you order, or come and try it in Red Hill. The full edit is in our Christian Kimber collection.

Cold machine wash on a gentle cycle. Dry flat in the shade.
