The base carries leather and studs. That is the part nobody photographs. It is also the reason a leather tote still stands upright when it is full instead of slumping onto its side.
The leather is a chocolate nubuck stamped with a weave, from a tannery in Santa Croce sull'Arno in Tuscany that has been working since 1976. Christian Kimber has the tote handmade in Milan by a family-owned factory established in 1895. Inside is a Prince of Wales check lining made exclusively for him, with a zip pocket.
The zip runs wide across the mouth, so the whole bag opens rather than a gap in it. The handles are long enough for the shoulder. The hardware is industrial grade.
On the flight home it spent twenty-two hours under the seat in front, with the passports, a laptop and a book that did not get finished. At the carousel it stood up on its own.
