The Wyatt starts life as knitwear. POL knit it in 100% merino and then boil it until it felts. That gives a knit a structure it does not usually have. It adds warmth as well.

The shape depends on that structure. The body is boxy. A curved stand collar in rib sits up at the neck. The sleeves are dolman, cut in one with the body and drawn in at a ribbed cuff. A ribbed hem pulls the width back in at the hip.

Ivory is the colour that shows all of it, because on pale wool you see the shape before you see the colour. Over black in July. Over a shirt and not much else in September.

On Friday it travels folded on the back seat, which is how boiled wool should be kept anyway. It goes on an hour later beside the car in the dark, where the wind is colder than anything the city offered.

Knits and some tops come in letter sizes instead: an XS is an AU 8, S an AU 10, M an AU 12, L an AU 14 and XL an AU 16. The measurements below are the house's own, in centimetres, taken from the body rather than the garment.

Choosing between two sizes

POL's chart gives the body measurements each size is built on. The house suggests comparing them with your own. Its models generally wear an 8 unless a piece says otherwise. Any style we know to run differently is noted in its Fit line.

How to measure

Bust: around the fullest part.
Waist: around the slimmest part of your natural waist, between the ribcage and the navel.
Hip: around the widest part, at the top of the legs.

Caring for POL knitwear

Check the care label first. If a knit is not dirty, air it between wears rather than washing it.

Hand wash in cool water with a gentle or delicates detergent. The house advises against woolwash, which can make dyes run. A little hair conditioner leaves natural-fibre knits softer.

Roll the knit in a clean towel to lift out the water, reshape it while damp and dry it flat in the shade. Never on the line, which stretches it. Store it folded, not on a hanger.

Some pilling is normal on cotton, merino and cashmere, mostly under the arms. Hand washing helps, as does keeping knits away from fleece-lined jackets and rough surfaces. A pilling shaver lifts what appears. Take off jewellery that could snag before you put a knit on.

For everything else, follow the care label sewn into the piece.
