The dye goes in last. Not into the yarn before knitting, which is how most cotton is coloured, but into the finished garment after it is sewn.

That single decision is what you feel first. Dye applied at the end collects darker where the cloth doubles, along the placket and around the cuff, so the colour has variation in it instead of sitting flat across the surface. It also takes the newness out of the cotton, so a Hastings feels worn in on the first day rather than the tenth. Italian piqué, made in Portugal, mother-of-pearl buttons, a straight hem you can leave out.

Marine is deep enough to read black indoors and unmistakeably blue in daylight.

The wind that was behind you going out is in your face coming home. That is the whole problem with links golf and it is why a long sleeve in piqué beats a short sleeve with something pulled over the top at the turn.
